Scribe Post for January 30, 2009

Today in math, our class started off with Number of the Day which was 2 969.402

After that, Mr. Isfeld asked about our Gr. 8 algebra homework:

1. 6 - 3x = -6
2. 5x / 4 + 3 = -7

3. x / 5 = -3 / 4

These are pretty hard questions to answer so Mr. Isfeld told us steps to answer them.

Step # 1

Take away not needed numbers by doing their opposite operation so you can cancel them out and what you do to one side of the equal sign you do to the other.

Step #2

Answer anything you can solve.

Step #3

Find what the letter is.

After finding everything, verify by writing down the equation and then replacing the letters by the answer.

Here are some of the practice questions Mr. Isfeld gave us:

1. b - 2 = 4

b -2 + 2 = 4 + 2
b = 6

Verify

b -2 = 4
6 - 2 = 4
4 = 4

2. a + 3 + a = 5

a + 3 - 3 + a = 5 - 3
a + a - 2
2a / 2 = 2 / 2
a = 2

Verify

a + 3 + a = 5
1 + 3 + 1 = 5
4 + 1 = 5
5 = 5

3. 3d = 9

3d / 3 = 9 / 3

d = 3

Verify

3d = 9
3(3) = 9
9 = 9

4. 4 / f = 4

4f / 4 = 4 / 4
f = 1

Verify

4 / f = 4
4 / 1 = 4
4 = 4

After doing the algebra, our provincial folders got handed back to us and we finished doing our worksheet about ordering fractions and decimals in ascending (least to greatest) and descending (greatest to least) order. We also had to put down a goal about ordering the fractions.

I choose Razel to do the next scribe post.
