Scribe Post for March 23, 2009

Yesterday in class, we started off with "Number of the Day". The number of the day was 8756.934. Then we took some notes on perpendicular bisector and angle bisector.

Here are the notes:

Bisect: -Bi means "two"

-sect means "cut"

-so bisect means to cut in two

Perpendicular Bisector

A line that divides a line segment in half and is at right angles to it

eg.

How can you create or draw a perpendicular bisector?

1. Free hand, o.k. but not perfect

2. Protractor gets us 9o degree angle

-Ruler cuts line in half

eg.

3. Use a compass and create arcs
eg.

a) Open compass to greater than half the distance of line

b) Place compass on point A, draw an arc

c) Place compass on point B, draw an arc

d) Use a ruler to connect the intersections of the arcs that line is a perpendicular bisector

Angles

Angle: the figure formed by two lines with a common endpoint called a vertex

eg.

Acute angle: less than 90 degrees

eg.

Obtuse angle: more than 90 degrees

- less than 180 degrees

eg.

Angle bisector: the line that divides an angle into two equal parts

eg.

How do we make an angle bisector?

1. Free hand not perfect not accurate enough

2. Protractor

eg.

3. Compass

eg.

a) Arc from vertex

b) Arc from point S (intersection of line and arc)

c) Arc from point T (intersection of line and arc)

d) Line from arc intersections to vertex that is your angle bisector

After taking down all the notes, we worked on page 116-121 (Math Links)

On Friday we started with ''number of the day" and the number we did was "4792.831".

After Number of the Day, we did notes on

These are the notes
parrallel-describe lines in the same plane that never cross or intersect
-they are marked using arrows
'
perpendicular- describes lines that intersect at right angles(ninety degrees)
-they are marked by using a small square

Today in class the number of the day is 1936.295 so you all know that it's homework.

In math class we were taking notes about Area.
So for now I don't even know how to put drawings or pictures in the post so sorry guys.

Now I'm going to tell about area.

Area is the number of square units contained in a two dimensional region

Parallelogram - a four sided figure with opposite sides parallel and equal length

Base - A side of a two dimensional close figure
- common symbol is b

Height - the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite sides.
- common symbol is h

Perpendicular
- A line that meets another line at a right or 90 degree angle.

Those were the notes we have taken.

Here's a video about Volume (L x W x H) oh and if the link ain't working then press ctrl + left click

We started off our class by doing Number of the Day. The number of the day was 7214.586. After that, we handed in our number of the day booklets for a check. We also got a chance to catch up on our provincial folder worksheets.

Some examples of the worksheets we had to finish are:

-Find as many ways as you can to represent 3/4, 1.25, etc.

-Match the correct fraction to the correct picture

-Order the fractions from least to greatest or greatest to least

Today's homework is to write an algebraic equation and solve it, for the following statement:

Daylon talked for 45 minutes in today's class. How many minutes did he work?

Make sure you study for the term test tomorrow. The test is going to be on everything we have learned since the beginning of the year, from rounding numbers to solving algebraic equations.

Scribe Post for January 30, 2009

Today in math, our class started off with Number of the Day which was 2 969.402

After that, Mr. Isfeld asked about our Gr. 8 algebra homework:

1. 6 - 3x = -6
2. 5x / 4 + 3 = -7

3. x / 5 = -3 / 4

These are pretty hard questions to answer so Mr. Isfeld told us steps to answer them.

Step # 1

Take away not needed numbers by doing their opposite operation so you can cancel them out and what you do to one side of the equal sign you do to the other.

Step #2

Answer anything you can solve.

Step #3

Find what the letter is.

After finding everything, verify by writing down the equation and then replacing the letters by the answer.

Here are some of the practice questions Mr. Isfeld gave us:

1. b - 2 = 4

b -2 + 2 = 4 + 2
b = 6

Verify

b -2 = 4
6 - 2 = 4
4 = 4

2. a + 3 + a = 5

a + 3 - 3 + a = 5 - 3
a + a - 2
2a / 2 = 2 / 2
a = 2

Verify

a + 3 + a = 5
1 + 3 + 1 = 5
4 + 1 = 5
5 = 5

3. 3d = 9

3d / 3 = 9 / 3

d = 3

Verify

3d = 9
3(3) = 9
9 = 9

4. 4 / f = 4

4f / 4 = 4 / 4
f = 1

Verify

4 / f = 4
4 / 1 = 4
4 = 4

After doing the algebra, our provincial folders got handed back to us and we finished doing our worksheet about ordering fractions and decimals in ascending (least to greatest) and descending (greatest to least) order. We also had to put down a goal about ordering the fractions.

Scribe post january 28 2009

Today's class we worked on number of the day, 1269.584

Then Ordering Fractions Strategies.

1. Using landmarks, landmarks are things everybody should know.

eg. Let's meet at polo park.

I live near the forks.

bold words are landmarks

Fraction landmarks include:
1/10, 1/5, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 1/1

Practice: which is larger 11/15 or 7/10

Using our second strategy finding common denominators we see that 11/15 equals 22/30 and 7/10 equals 21/30. There for 11/15 is greater.

Third startegy is converting to decimals. Decimals are always over or out of one. So we follow the same steps as equivalent fractions only this time our equivalent fraction must be over 1.

For example: 3/5 converts to 0.6/1. We must divide 5 by 5 to have a denominator of 1. Therefor we must also divide the numerator by 5. So we get 3 divided by 5 equals 0.6

Things to remember a fraction is a part of a whole.

The line seperating the numerator and denominator means divided by.

After Number of the Day , we did a balancing act .
The total for today's balancing act is 48 .
Here is a picture for the people who didn't
have enough time to draw it down .

We also worked on our provincial folders .

We had to order fractions from ascending and descending .

ascending - to order numbers least to greatest .
descending - to order numbers greatest to least .

Today in class we had to go over yesterdays homework.

The homework was the balancing act.

It looked like this:

The total for the whole balancing act is 160.
Here is the answer for the people who
didn't get a chance to write it down
during class.

Also, today we started our provincial folders.

For the first segment of proof that we had to put in our folders

eg. Put the following decimals in order from least to greatest.
1.3 0.9 0.2 0.8 1.2 1.6 1.8 0.1

In order the numbers would be:

0.1 0.2 0.8 0.9 1.2 1.3 1.6 1.8
If you got something like this right on the sheet you would have to give yourself one check mark and put the date next to it. if you didn't get to put any check marks on your sheet, you would have to come another day and try to get it right a second time.

Today at Math class, my class had a test ! The test had 42 questions and it was about percent, decimals, fractions, outliers, range, mean, and mode. After the test, we had to do Number of the Day. If we finished Number of the day and still had some time, we had to do a balance question. It looked like this :

Sorry if I made some mistakes in the picture. Those looked like the shapes that I copied down.

After that, we corrected our tests. That was pretty much what happened in Math today.

Here is a Math video. It is called Mathmaticious ( Math-ma-tish-iss ). This video is about math and it has the tune of Fergie's song called Feralicious. I put this video on the blog because it's funny and it mentions some math that we have been doing. The video actually starts at 30 seconds. I hope you like it.

Today we did math link page 437-439 1-16We have a Quiz tommorow jan 22 2009 its about

decimals/fraction/percents/mean/median/mode/range/outlierThis could help you for the test tommorow

Decimals-A linear array of digits that represents a real number, every decimal place indicating a multiple of a negative power of 10. For example, the decimal 0.1 = 1/10 , 0.12 = 12/100 , 0.003 = 3/1000 . Also called decimal fraction.

Fraction- a number expressed as a quotient, in which a numerator is divided by a denominator. In a simple fraction, both are integers. A complex fraction has a fraction in the numerator or denominator. In a proper fraction, the numerator is less than the denominator. If the numerator is greater, it is called an improper fraction and can also be written as a mixed number — a whole-number quotient with a proper-fraction remainder. Any fraction can be written in decimal form by carrying out the division of the numerator by the denominator. The result may end at some point, or one or more digits may repeat without end.

Percent-, a quantity can be increased by any percentage but cannot be decreased by more than 100 percent. Once pollution has been reduced by 100 percent, for example, it ceases to exist. In defiance of this logic, however, advertisers sometimes refer to a 150 percent decrease in lost luggage or a new dental rinse that reduces plaque on teeth by over 300 percent. Presumably what is implied by the latter is that the new rinse is three times as effective as some other rinse, but such constructions are still subject to criticism as illogical.·Percent can take a singular or plural verb, depending on how the quantity being described is viewed. Very often what determines the form of the verb is the noun nearest to it. Thus one might say Eighty percent of the legislators are going to vote against the bill or Eighty percent of the legislature is set to vote the bill down. In the second sentence the group of legislators is considered as a body, not as individuals. When percent is used without a following prepositional phrase, either a singular or plural verb is acceptable.
Measures Of Central Tendancy
mean- The MEAN is the arithmetic average, the average you are probably used to finding for a set of numbers - add up the numbers and divide by how many there are:Eg(80 + 90 + 90 + 100 + 85 + 90) / 6 = 89 1/6.

mode-The mode of a set of numbers is the one that occurs most often. So, in the set {1,5,7,5,9}, the mode is 5 because there are 2 fives and only one of each of the others.Now here is a problem for you: Find the mode of this set of numbers:2 6 9 0 5 2 4 1 6 4 5 2

median- Median is the middle value of the given numbers or distribution in their ascending order.Median is the average value of the two middle elements when the size of the distribution is even.

Range-Example 1:The Jaeger family drove through 6 midwestern states on their summer vacation. Gasoline prices varied from state to state. What is the range of gasoline prices?$1.79, $1.61, $1.96, $2.09, $1.84, $1.75Solution:Ordering the data from least to greatest, we get:$1.61, $1.75, $1.79, $1.84, $1.96, $2.09highest - lowest = $2.09 - $1.61 = $0.48Answer:The range of gasoline prices is $0.48.

Outliers- For a set of numerical data, any value that is markedly smaller or larger than other values. For example, in the data set {3, 5, 4, 4, 6, 2, 25, 5, 6, 2} the value of 25 is an outlier.I

Eg.

I have two and a half 2 1/2. Who has an picture representation of one third ?
I have one third who has Equivalent fraction of 0.25? I have 1/4 .Ext....

After that our abusive teacher assigned us to do some textbook work on page 437 starting at number one going on to whatever number we could possibley get to before the class was over.

Here are all of the questions on page 437 :

1)In you words explain what a range and a outlier is?

Great job you guys!

It has only been 2 days since you were taught how to use Blogger (better), and you guys are using those notes pretty fast. It's also nice to see that a lot of people are leaving comments behind. Keep it up! If you do, we'll hopefully see more visitors checking out our blog (by looking at the Cluster Map). I'm sure that Mr. Isfeld and Mr. Harbeck are also very proud of you all.

Keep up all the great work!
